General Police Questions

Does the Newberry Township Police Department remove wild animals ?

Unless we deem an animal to be a risk to the community (i.e. rabid, aggressive), we do not remove non-domestic animals.  Injured deer, bear, and similar animals are picked up the PA Game Commission.  Animals such as skunks, groundhogs, and rabbits that are not deemed a risk must be removed by a private pest removal company.  They can be found in the phone book.

What do I do if I received a traffic citation?

A traffic citation is any citation written for a violation of the vehicle code.  The more common traffic citations are issued for speeding, failure to yield, improper inspection, improper registration, or driver’s license issues.

If you receive a traffic citation and you intend to plead guilty to the offense, you may simply issue payment to the District Magistrate listed on your copy of the citation.

If you receive a traffic citation and you intend to plead NOT guilty to the offense, you may request a court date from the District Magistrate’s office listed on your copy of the citation.

If you have misplaced the original citation and need additional information regarding the citation, you may contact the District Magistrate who has jurisdiction over the location where the offense occurred

You have 10 days to respond to a citation issued by a police officer.  Your response must be addressed to Magisterial District Judge Scott Gross’s office located at 700 Yorktown Road Lewisberry, PA 17339. Follow the instructions on the back of your copy of the citation.  Failure to respond within the 10 days allotted can result in a suspension of your driver’s license and a warrant being issued for your arrest.

What do I do if I received a non-traffic citation?

You may refer to a non-traffic citation as a ‘ticket’.  An individual might receive a ‘ticket’ for such activity as Public Drunkenness, Disorderly Conduct, Violation of local ordinances, Violation of alcohol laws, and other minor offenses.  Non-traffic citations are handled at the individual magistrate’s offices

Plead Not Guilty and Request a hearing from the District Justice. Call 717-938-2523 for more information or read and fill out the back of the ticket you have received.

What do I do if I received a parking ticket?

You can plead guilty to the parking ticket and pay the $5.00 fine. This payment can either be mailed to the Newberry Township Police Department or done in person at the police station during normal business hours.

You can contest the parking ticket by not responding to it within the allotted 10 days. After failing to respond, you will be sent a State Non-Traffic citation for violating the Township parking ordinance. The instructions on how to respond to this citation are the same as with a State issued traffic citation listed above.
