On 4/9/2025 officers of the West Manchester Township Police Department were dispatched to the Rutter's Store at 1590 Kenneth Rd. Officer's were advised that a card skimming device was found on an in-store ATM. Anyone who has used that ATM in the past several weeks is urged to review their bank statements for any suspicious activity.
Card skimming occurs when devices illegally installed on or inside ATMs, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, or fuel pumps capture card data and record cardholders’ PIN entries. Criminals use the data to create fake payment cards and then make unauthorized purchases or steal from victims' accounts. Skimming devices can consist of external card readers, internal card readers, fake keypads or overlays, and pinhole cameras to record pin code entries on the keypad.
Customers should always check ATMs, gas pumps, and payment machines for unusual, loose, or added equipment which could indicate a skimming device or pinhole camera. While completing a debit transaction, users should cover their hand to thwart a camera while entering the pin. Contactless payment options may be a safer way to pay.
