Update to original information that was provided.
We have been made aware of information that has been circulating on Social Media regarding an attempted abduction at Sheetz (Air Tag incident) and also Rutters (Attempted child abduction). The information for these two incidents are unrelated and are two separate incidents. We have contacted Rutters, Sheetz and Northern School District and have determined that this information is, as far as we can find, not completely accurate. There were no reports to our Police Department, no witnesses to the attempted "abduction" and no reports to any of the stores.
We have taken additional steps to investigate this incident and have spoken with the original source of the "Air Tag" incident. We have learned that this did not occur in Dillsburg. The person we spoke with, provided this information to another person, who in turn notified the School of the information. We were informed that this incident occurred in Mechanicsburg. We have spoken with the PA State Police and Department's in Cumberland County, all of which have no records on file of any incident occurring. A reference has also been seen that the individual was arrested in the bathroom and had a history of human trafficking. This information has also not been corroborated by any of the agencies that we spoke with and the original source said that they "thought they might have a history" of this.
Using an Air Tag to track individuals is a method that criminal may use to try and target a victim or a vehicle. Therefore the information provided by the High School in the community update, is a valid point to be taken into consideration.
We want to ensure our community that we have a close working relationship with our School District and, if at any time there is a threat to public safety, we will communicate that with the community as soon as possible. Please use caution when sharing posts that you see online that may not be accurate as it may cause unnecessary panic.
Take care and be assured we take these types of things serious and will do everything we can to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors.
