No one can question the dedication of Chief Troy Bankert’s Group Violence Initiative (GVI) unit. GVI’s goal? To keep individuals “Safe, Alive, and out of Prison.” The unit can be seen regularly walking in the community with Reverend Walthour and the Street Soldiers of the Shiloh Baptist Church. They’ve even been seen cleaning up trash and other debris in York City’s west end. Do you know what else they’ve been cleaning up? Illegal guns.
What few people know is that this group of officers, led by Sgt Jay, have quietly been getting illegal guns off the streets all year. How many guns you ask? As of now, 28 total. That’s nearly a third of the 92 illegal guns that the police department has recovered year to date. It should be made clear that we are not talking about legally owned guns registered to private citizens. We are talking about guns that are stolen, have obliterated serial numbers, that are owned by felons, or have been used in the commission of crimes.
