On June 26, 2019 at 0957 hours, an Officer from the West Manchester Township Police Department was dispatched to Weis Markets at 1800 Roosevelt Avenue in West Manchester Township for an adult male employee in custody for internal Theft.
The Officer responded to the store and spoke with the Weis Asset Protection Manager. The APM stated he had been investigating an internal theft involving an employee named Sakai Barton. The APM stated through the course of his investigation he discovered Barton had intentionally under ringed fruit merchandise from the salad bar which was held for sale by Weis. The APM stated Barton would select the merchandise and then ring up the merchandise under barcode 4011 which is associated with bananas at $.59 cents per pound. The $.59 cents per pound price is far lower than the actual price of the merchandise selected by Barton. The APM stated his investigation revealed these transactions occurred approximately 105 times at an average loss of $7.97 per transaction. The APM stated the total loss was $836.85.
The APM brought Barton into the store office for an interview prior to my arrival. The APM questioned Barton about his involvement. Barton admitted to his involvement stating he intentionally entered the P/U bar code 4011 for bananas each time he made a purchase of food items from the salad bar. Barton admitted to this activity on approximately 105 occasions for a total loss of $836.85. Barton provided the APM with a written statement.
The Officer made contact with Barton in the office. The Officer informed Barton that he was under arrest for Theft and Barton was advised of his Miranda Rights which he stated understood. Barton agreed to speak with the Officer. Barton admitted to the offenses stating he intentionally entered price bar code 4011 for food items which he knew would reduce the price significantly. Barton admitted to doing this approximately 105 times for a total loss of $836.85.
Based on the information, Sakai Malik Barton was charged with 1 count of Retail Theft, Misdemeanor 1 and 1 count of Theft by Deception, Misdemeanor 1.
