2017 Crime Statistics Released

The Spring Garden Township Police Department is releasing the crime statistics for the period of January 1, 2017 to June 30, 2017.

There were 427 crimes reported for the first six months of 2017. The Uniform Crime Report Program divides offenses into Part 1 and Part 2 crimes.  Part 1 crimes are considered the most serious and most likely to be reported. They include murder, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson. For the reporting period, 159 Part 1 crimes were reported which is a 14% decrease from the same period in 2016. Even with a 25% decline in thefts from motor vehicles (63 to 47), theft and theft from motor vehicles continue to be the most prevalent offenses in the Township. The majority of these could have been prevented by securing valuables and locking parked vehicles. There was also a notable decrease in burglaries (24 to 16) and motor vehicle theft (15 to 8) from 2016.

With regard to Part 2 crimes, disorderly conduct, fraud, simple assault and related offenses continue to be the most prevalent offenses in the Township. It should also be noted that we have seen an increase in illegal drug violations (15 to 27), an 80% increase from 2016.

Although not reported as part of the Uniform Crime Report Program, we also document motor vehicle accidents in our records management system. For the reporting period, 181 motor vehicle accidents were investigated  by the police department which is a 16% (156 to 181) increase from 2016. Unfortunately, we had one fatality for 2017.
