“Hostage” Phone Call Scam Alert

Recently several law enforcement agencies in Central Pennsylvania have received complaints of "hostage" phone call scams.  During the call, the callers states that the victim's relative is in danger.  The caller states that the relative has been taken "hostage" or has been involved in a crash. The victim is told that they must pay $2,000.00 or their relative will be harmed.  In some of the calls, the caller has possessed some background information on the victims and in one incident, they possessed information on the relative.

Although the calls appear to be originating from outside the country, the caller ID on the victim's phone typically displays a local phone number.

Residence are encouraged to report similar incidents to the police department by calling 911.
